The Hidden is a multiplayer total conversion for the popular Half-Life 2 computer game. The gameplay revolves around the retrieval of an escaped research subject where the subject is highly agile, incredibly strong, and nearly invisible. The first beta version was released on June 13, 2005 and its latest release was September 8, 2007 (thanks Wikipedia).

My personal view is that The Hidden: Source is a hell of a lot of fun! There is no other game like this that I've ever played. When you are playing as The Hidden, invisible and hunting the IRIS soldiers you will feel like a super-hero, capable of terrorising the other players in the server! When you are being hunted, the atmosphere and sense of fear is fantastic, you can get quite a shock when all of a sudden you are attacked! Finally, we all love a sense of comedy in games, much like BF2, you will find this in The Hidden: Source as well; whether this is seeing a soldiers body being dragged around like a rag-doll or some of the funny radio commands you can use, it's brilliant, even in a Horror FPS!

Storyline
In the early 1950s human genetics experimentation was taking its first, tentative steps. Amongst many other black projects, a team of British scientists working at an Infinitum Research experimental station stumbled across some remarkable phenomena involving DNA manipulation. This led to deeper research with dangerously unpredictable results, often leading to human patients losing their lives in irresponsible and immoral experiments.

Time passed on, and by the mid 1990s the failure rate of the experiments had been reduced from 75% to a mere 15%, enough for Infinitum to move onto the next stage: Biological Light Refraction. The British team were hoping to unravel the possibilities of light manipulation to create the perfect covert military agent. Early into the new millennium, due to a gross miscalculation, a series of tests on Subject 617 led to a massive synaptic trauma leaving the patient with multiple genetic anomalies.

The subject was left in constant pain and with unstable DNA. The subject escaped captivity, killing anyone that got in its way. The I.R.I.S. (Infinitum Research Interception Squad) team have been deployed to return the subject to a maximum security Infinitum Research facility for further study and dissection. The entire project was considered a failure: all funding ceased and development was discontinued while all records and traces of the experiments were destroyed. Infinitum Research denies all knowledge of any form of human DNA manipulation but are more than happy to comment on the possibilities of cloning human organs inside suitable animal donors. It is believed that these organ cloning experiments form the main cover for their human genetic manipulation experimentations.

Subject 617, known as 'The Hidden', must turn the tables and become the hunter instead of the hunted as the I.R.I.S. team close their net around him.

The Hidden
As the Hidden, the player is given several extra abilities not available to the IRIS; The Hidden is nearly invisible, with only a little distortion of the background indicating his presence, sticking to walls, and the ability to detect enemies' auras from a distance. Other abilities include pouncing and cannibalizing corpses of slain enemies to replenish health.

Gameplay
The Hidden is played by rounds. Each player selects one of the nine IRIS characters; each character is visually distinct, but does not have differing abilities that affect gameplay. A player may choose to play as two classes: Assault and Support. The main difference between Assault and Support is that Support can replenish teammates' ammo. The player also chooses a main weapon, a side arm, and an item. Each round, a player is selected automatically to be the Hidden, usually based on how much damage they dealt to the Hidden in previous rounds. All the other players play as the IRIS, whose goal is to work as a team to hunt down the Hidden and contain it. After the time limit hits, or either side kills the other, the round will end, and a new Hidden may be selected (depending both on who won the previous round, and on the server's settings).

So who has read this / watched the video?

Anyone that already has HL2 thinking of installing this mod or if not, purchasing Half-Life 2 to play it?

it's only £7 now in the UK Steam Store. $10 in the US Store / €10 in the EU Store.

This looks really interesting and I have Half-Life 2 for Steam. If there are still enough people playing this game I would like to test it.

There are, our Hidden Source Server is regularly full and normally has at least a few players in there. Let me know when you have installed it and we'll go have some fun!
