Ok, usually this kind of problem is caused by a network-kind of issue / block, either on your Router or on your Computer (i.e. Firewall). On a Windows environment, you should allow BF2.exe in the Firewall for both public and private networks.
Rarely rebooting the Router/Modem helps too; but also be aware that the game needs a direct connection to the internet: if you are behind a NAT Server or if your Router somehow does not connect directly to the internet, you may have problems.
If you are on a Laptop I would suggest taking it to another place (for example at a friend's house) and try to retrieve/create your account from there, see if it connects to the BF2Hub Account Server.
Your first post needs a bit of editing: I didn't understand if you were able to play online or not,
with your current setup (Mac + Wine). If so, were you using the Revive Launcher or the
Battlefield 2 for Mac release by battlelog.co? Or were you going through Wine as you are now?
