Ventrilo Setup Guide

Ventrilo.com wrote:

Ventrilo 3.0.0 is the next evolutionary step of Voice over IP (VoIP) group communications software. Ventrilo is also the industry standard by which all others measure themselves as they attempt to imitate its features.

By offering surround sound positioning and special sound effects on a per user, per channel, per server or global configuration level the program provides each user the option to fully customize exactly how they wish to hear sounds from other users or events.

Ventrilo is best known for it's superior sound quality and minimal use of CPU resources so as not to interfere with day to day operations of the computer or during online game competitions. It is also preferred for the simple user interface that any first time computer user can very quickly learn because the most commonly used features are immediately visible and can be activated with a single click of the mouse.

[1] Download Ventrilo Here: http://www.lost-soldiers.org/files/cat-1/ once downloaded right click on the file and run the executable as Administrator, proceed to complete the installation.

We recommend you select the 32bit version, even if you are using a 64bit operating system. Having tested the 64bit version on Windows 10 64bit we had a lot of issues, if you are using Windows 10, definitely take the 32bit version: http://www.lost-soldiers.org/files/file-1/ If you are using a different 64bit operating system you are welcome to try the 64bit version but we would recommend you save yourself the likely trouble it will cause and install the 32bit version as you won't gain anything particular from the 64bit

[2] If the installer asks you whether you want to place a shortcut on your desktop, tick the box.

[3] Once it's installed find your shortcut or the actual executable file and right click on it then select "properties" from the menu.

[4] Click the "Compatibility" tab and then check the box for "Run this program as an administrator". Then click apply/ok.

(Auto resize: 1222x961px, png)

[5] Run the program by double clicking the Ventrilo shortcut or executable. You will be presented with a window like this:

(Auto resize: 822x835px, png)

[6] Click the Right-Side Arrow "->" to the right of the User Name drop-down menu indicated on the image with a "1" - You will see something similar to the below:

(Auto resize: 518x1237px, png)

- Click "New" and type your Soldier Alias into the box. Do not include any community tags like [LS].
- Click OK & then OK again.

[7] Click the Right-Side Arrow "->" to the right of the Server drop-down menu indicated on the image with a "2".

- As shown in the image below, click "New" and give the Server a name. Then click Ok.

(Auto resize: 991x985px, png)

- Fill in the details as shown below then click ok.

Hostname or IP: voice.lost-soldiers.org
Port: 3784
Leave Password Blank Unless You Have Specifically Been Given A Ventrilo Password!

[8] Click Setup indicated on the image with a "3" - You will see something similar to the below:
http://www.lost-soldiers.org/images/help/v4.png
(Auto resize: 1350x1649px, png)

- Make sure the checkboxes for: "Enable outgoing voice communication", "Use Push To Talk Hotkey" & "Use Direct Input to detect Hotkey" are ticked.
- Make sure the "Use Direct Sound" checkboxes are ticked for Input Device & Output Device.
- Untick the "Play Key Clicks" checkbox unless you want an annoying beeping sound every time you speak.

- Decide which key or mouse button you want to use to speak. You will need to hold this key or button down continuously in order to transmit your voice so choose it wisely. You also don't want it to clash with a BF2 button. Personally, I changed my BF2 controls to my own custom configuration which freed up Left-CTRL. Another common choice is 'Caps Lock' but it can leave you shouting at people unintentionally when you go to type something every now and then. Click the "Hotkey" area indicated with the red box on the image then immediately press the key or click the button you want to use. You will see it added to the "hotkey" box if it was successful.

- Select the Input (Microphone) & Output (Speakers/Headset) you would like to use from the drop-down menu. WARNING: Using a very long Audio Extension Cable Adapter to connect your microphone (or headset + microphone) to the Computer may interfere with Ventrilo or reduce the quality of the input stream.

(Auto resize: 936x814px, png)

- You may also like to set your Microphone or Input Device for "Hardware Input Mixer" but I have had issues with this on my new laptop so left it blank. If you get this error then leave it blank:
http://www.lost-soldiers.org/images/help/v6.png
(Auto resize: 96x1111px, png)

- Finally, you may need to adjust the Amplifiers section if people tell you that your mic is quiet or you are struggling to hear others loudly enough. Outbound is your Microphone Volume, Inbound is the Volume of other users voices.

- Click "OK".

9) You may like to explore other settings in Setup but this should be sufficient for now. I would recommend going to the "Misc" Tab in Setup and ticking the "Minimise To System Tray" Checkbox as well.

10) You are now ready to connect so go ahead, click "Connect". To move between Ventrilo channels double click on the one you want to join once you have connected. Please note, access to certain channels is dependent on your level within the community so some may be restricted to you.

Cheers!

Thread edited; added warning at the end of step 8 due to problems with a long Audio Extension Cable Adapter, reported by Sennin06 while setting up his Ventrilo according to this guide.

He was using this long extension cord, with his headset + microphone. Not really a true headset but rather some earphones with a microphone and an unique 3.5 mm jack for both. While using the extension cord, his voice sounded really far and not clear; without the cord instead, the voice was very crisp and also Ventrilo's menus picked up the external earphones.

Are there a lot of people on Ventrilo? In game everyone seems to just be talking by using squad chat rather than Ventrilo?

Normally there are quite a few, it's been quiet the past few weeks because it's Christmas holiday time. I'm not at home for instance, I'm on holiday so I didn't bring my MIC. We have had up to 7/8 of us on Ventrilo at one time before though.

It's also useful for us to be able to communicate outside of the game and we enjoy using Ventrilo to chat / catch up. Sometimes you won't be in a squad, on the same team or even in the same server as someone you want to speak to so in this case it's good too.

I do suggest to disable the "push to talk" button so yoi can speak easier in combat

I would prefer people to find a suitable push to talk button because not using one can lead to your Mic picking up annoying noises / game sounds or something you don't want others to hear...
