When and how is sombody "cheating"?

By cheating I mean that using enhancements to get an extra edge is removing the essens of the game from a teamplay to an individual player..

First I have to tell a litle about myself. I am 46 years old and I was "bitten" of FFP games in around 2000.
I played Counterstike and Battlefield 1 but didnt really get hooked until Battlefield 2.
Me and my mate pre-ordered the game and we got a release 2 weeks before the public release.

Btw. Counterstrike got so infested with cheats so that wasnt fun anymore. Everytime I got killed I wondered IF they where cheating?
Not for braging but I was among the first to get the commander badge in gold and I got the pilot-badge in gold soon after that.
In the beginning there wasnt many players that see the fun in beeing commander so they didnt complain.
Well, I was beeing commander while flying and it was the way to go if you wanted to kill a lot..
I was in this norwegian clan called IRF ( Imidiate Reaction Force) and we had a lot of fun.
In the summer of 2006 was I the second most playing gamer of BF2 in europe!! Besides work and sleep I had a average of 8 hours a day for a month!! Thats 30 days with 8 hour gametime every day!.
My friends that didnt play was lost, and I had my friends online.
People I didnt meet in person and not really knew that much, exept that they played a lot.
I had a high-end computer system with a 37" screen (big back then) and soon I was lost in cybercpace. :-/
Lucky for me my pc crashed in 2006 and after a 10 year brake, I install BF2 again a few months ago.

The gameplay has changed a bit in 10 years especially the pilots in the helicopters. In the old days it was a must to have a good gunner and it was always easy to find one. Now they skream "Get out, get out" if I want to be with them.
Why is that, what have happened in 10 years?

Now I know...

I have been watcing cheaters on youtube and some are just stupid. With aimbot they kill several way out of their reach, and is easly spotted in their way of playing and kill-stats, and everybody is complaining and try to wote them out.

When is a sports atlet cheating?
When using stereoids to get the edge that the person needs to get the win and he/she risks to be banned from the sports for a long time.
Is it that they dont have the skillz or talent to be the best?
I would say yes but I do understand it because they have spent their whole life to become as good as they can be but it isnt eneugh. They just cant reach the money!
Many of the atlets have spent their whole life training to become the best, and its very difficult to accept that all their work talent is just not enaugh.

This game is not about money..

SO... If chating is about getting the edge, then we have to talk about, not only the obvious cheatings such as aim-bots, glitcing and wall-hacks and whatever is out there, but everything that gives the edge.
Two friends that talk to eachother and play on different teams and give information about their team is one way og getting the edge.

Another way is using skripts.
Skripts. Hva is it?
Skripts can be used to automate a serie of keaboard strokes so it can be done in pressing one button.

One example is in helicopter. You jump in the TV seat, fire the rocket and send you back in the driver seat with one keastroke. In automating this, the rocket will fire at once and all you have to do is point the heli in the right direction and press one button.
When using skrips one person can dominate with a heli and give the team the extra edge..
Is that not cheating?

By the essens of the game I would be enclined to say yes. Just as an atlet is using steroids..
Its disrupting the essens of the game and giving the edge to a person and his team. It takes away the need for cooperation that was intended in the developing the fairness of the game, and also the human error is lost.
When the skillz in tuning a skript is what gives the player the exstra edge more than skill in the game, then the skript becomes like stereoids.
Not everybody have the possibility to get the skripts, or dont have the know-how to use skripting so it make everybody play on un-even terms.

The developers at Dice that invented the game spent hours after hours ro make the game as even as possible, so the game would be as playable no matter how many players there is.
The game is even when you choose the correct weapons to conter the enemy.

The geniality of Dice and their stuggle to make the most fair game of all, is why Battlefield 2 still lives on for a decade, and still is really fun.
Using cheats is like pissing in your pants to get warm. It seams like a good idea in the beginning, but it dont last long and normal people knows its stupid..

(if you read all this pls say thanks if you liked it.) :-)

Thanks

So many spelling mistakes, aaargh my eyes unhappy

Italy S_h_a_r_k_93 it's: "food for thought" and "refer to my thoughts".

Steve, I will forgive you and I'm too lazy to list all your corrections. Laugh

Somebody is cheating when they:
Act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage.

With regards to video games, this means they are using exploits, glitches or software to manipulate the core code of the client/game which is not intended to be modified by the publisher. This is why Macros are not considered cheating and never were by EA. It's not an unfair advantage when you are quite capable of reading/learning about something yourself to give yourself every legal advantage possible. If you are too lazy to do so, then that's your problem.

I don't quite agree on the end of the last paragraph (well actually not as much for Macros but rather to going through the hassle of tweaking some game configuration files that - and I quote - "are not intended to be modified by the publisher"); thanks for pointing out my mistakes, must have been a (huge) discraction (for me to mispell it twice smile).

Its about the essens of the game. When one team have a good seatswitching helipilot and the other dont, that heli more or less controls the game..
Its not that important anyway its just a game.. OK

I read a lot about the game before it was released. I remember they pushed release date several times and they talked a lot about the fairness of the game..

About my grammarskillz..

I guess a Jet (in a hand of a capable pilot) is a very effective weapon against very good chopper pilots. If there is one very annoying thing for chopper pilots, than it is a jet attacking your chopper without warning / lock-on with the MG

I agree with your point, but the jet can only do so much. The jet also have to fight the other teams jets.

I feel Its a little besides the point. The point I try to discuss in the text was that the essens of the game is the teamplaying and the human errors and everything that goes with that. Automating reduce the value of it..
My best memories of the game is rounds where everybody teamplayed on both sides with commanders, squads and everything. I can still remember full servers with the same players all night.

Maybe the addiction of the game is like with drugs. Its the search for that very good high that was there in the beginnig but now its just memory..

Yeah, of course we don't need to struggle about that cheats are shit amused
I personally can not understand why people are doing this, ruining all fun. Maybe they just want to annoy people. I remember a match on Wake in which a USMC jet pilot directed his F35 deliberately in a fully occupied blackhahwk of his team, jumping out a second before the impact. The pilot of the blackhawk got a sixfold teamkill and was banned on the server. Just for fun. Trolls are everywhere and they are among us now and they will be among us in the future.

I remember the times before the battlelog era and I know about the fun operating in a good squad. I played a lot with some friends in a squad, and even if we were never the best jet pilots / chopper gunner / infanterists, we usually won the matches just because of teamplay.
Many of excellent players are no longer with us these days and there is a big bunch of new players in BF2, many of them played BF4 or BF3 or other shooters like CoD before. They don't know how important the teamwork is. For some of them a good k/d is the only statistic that matters.

Nevertheless BF2 is still a big fun for me. I usually play as squadleader, and I experience a lot of teamwork in my squad on the LS Wake server. (because I know many of the good teamplayers on that server and they know me)
