HardwareMilk dem hot GPUs!

So I've been playing today and I noticed some performance issues while playing on Dragon Valley. I tried to close what little I had opened in the background but it didn't help: from time to time my frames per second would drop to 40 or 50, and I could see some unusual bad tearing too.

I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M graphic card and it performs well on medium, but today it wasn't performing as usual. So Galactic|Pegasus asked me if the Computer was hot, and hot damn, it was! Laugh So later I went ahead and disassembled my Laptop, I've cleaned the fan (I was expecting more dust than what actually came out, but well ... ) and I have re-applied the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU.

Surprisingly it seemed like the thermal paste I had applied before was not there anymore. :'D So maybe that's why the CPU and GPU would get so hot when stressed. I hope I have applied the thermal paste correctly and I will test it in-game to see if I get those performance problems again. For the moment though it seems to go well!

 This was taken just after the first boot so it's indeed really low;
when the Computer runs normally I get between 42 and 45 degrees
on the CPU cores; unfortunately with the software I use (SpeedFan
4.49) I can't seem to get the readings from the GPU.

Nice, yeah your old Thermal Paste was really cheap OEM stuff which eventually must have burnt off. You should also expect a break-in period for your new Thermal Paste before you start to see best results. Did you follow a guide for applying it correctly and which Thermal Paste did you use?

The thermal paste that contains silver I've heard is the better of them. Clean your Old Paste off very good before you apply the New paste on both the CPU & the Heatsink. A real fast fix would be to put a desktop fan blowing on your Laptop/computer. aAjoy-rig But it works.

@5tarLine Yeah I have watched many tutorials in the past, as well for disassembling my Laptop correctly. I use an old thermal paste I've bought: Cooler Master HTK-002 [specs here].

@1ARMBLINDMAN This is what I used to plug into the Laptop with an USB cord scrapped from a broken PC Joystick! amused All home-made baby! ahah

The thing must be put under the back of my Laptop, after removing the battery. That's a direct soft blow of fresh air into the base of the Laptop (which must be lifted up a little bit to increase the air-flow), which cools both the desk and the base of the Laptop, thus preventing its intake fan from collecting already-hot air.

CPU-Z & GPU-Z -> Exactly what i would have recommended myself! Great lightweight tools that I've been using for years! OK

@ boky1122 -> I only ever played BF2 on a Desktop for a few months back when it came out around 2005/2006. Have been on a laptop for a couple of years now since i returned, also with a Cooler. wink

You need to be careful buying Coolers though, there is a lot of choice at similar prices but some are much better than others.

@cataly63 but those are only applications that monitor the values of the CPU/GPU, right?

Yes, S_h_a_r_k_93, and it allows you to detect if there is an abnormality, temperature, frequency, voltage, etc: useful, simply !

...Surprisingly it seemed like the thermal paste I had applied before was not there anymore..

Are you sure that you have not sold vaseline instead of thermal paste? Bad product ...???

Exactly, when i said i'd recommend it i meant, just in general, to have on your PC. You don't even need to install, just a small standalone .exe.

Too funneh. 'vaseline' Laugh Laugh

Being a Shark he may not know the difference between Vaseline & Thermal Paste...

I already have CPU-Z actually, shows RAM usage too and I needed it for my last upgrade.

Fuck sakes I forgot to update y'all on something I found out recently and that is working wonders for my Laptop's heating! Basically what I found out - and didn't know or thought about it before - is that if you limit your framerate the GPU will actually be less stressed because (if it's a medium-high GPU) it will be able to have small breaks between one render and the other.

Basically all you need to do is to make sure your game video preferences are set in a way that the GPU has a lot of juice for you, right? My GPU if uncapped can (when not overheated) render from 100 to 140 frames per second. But this is all unworthy because my monitor has a frequency of 60 Hertz so it will able to refresh my screen on 60 times a second, thus showing me more or less 60 frames too.

So all the remaining frames are either discarded or partially shown on the screen, causing the so called screen tearing effect. This is not the worst part though, because if you don't cap your GPU it will work like a mad man trying to cook as much frames as possible, with no breaks, thus overheating. When overheated my GPU starts to lose some shots, even going less than 60 fps and you'll start noticing it on the screen!

So I have my BF2 set to medium/low standards, so my GPU can handle it fine. Now I have set a frame rate limit of 75 (through the video.con configuration file) and I have also enabled Vertical Synchronization (through the Nvidia Control Panel and set it as a global setting) and guess what: my Laptop now lasts several more hours without being so hot that it will make your hands uncomfortable!

The GPU is much less stressed because it knows it only has to deliver me more or less 60 frames (thanks to VSync) so it has all the time to relax in the mean time and avoid overheating. VSync actually plays a good part of the picture here because it can tame my GPU and sync it with my monitor. In order to prevent overheating there are also other tune-ups you can have in the Nvidia Control Panel such as the power profile of the GPU (I have set it to adaptive).

I am sorry I didn't share this before, I wanted to but I guess I forgot and it occurred to me now again. smiling

If you were using a pc i would tell you to download MSI afterburner, it works on all video cards and lets you controll fan speed on chassis fan(s), GPU fan and CPU fan and also shows temp, watt, etc.
https://gifyu.com/images/scr1.png

But since you are using a laptop my advice is - GET A PC !

I saw some nice fans to put underneath laptops on ebay, they were gel round the outside for heat transfer and two fans in the middle, and only around 15 euro's, lots of cheap fans like that from China.
There's also a usb one that hooks on the air outlet of the laptop and sucks the air out and so helps the gpu fan circulate more air.
p.s. DONT try water cooling on a laptop :-(

Plan to check if the game actually does have built-in Vsyc? As far as I knew it didn't (you'd have to force it through eg. Nvidia Control Panel)
