Hello guys,

Below, I take the introductory text of the map, used on Moddb.......on Mar 16th, 2017 !

And, if you want to take a look, you can pick the map in the download section of the site: in user cp, on the left...smile

Something you have probably noticed is that, with Bf2 mod, there is very few maps, especially focused on aerial combat, so I thought it would be useful to create an extra, very wide, but, this time, with a huge mountainous landscape:

in fact, the presence of a strongly accentuated relief greatly improves the quality of the piloting by the fact that it's much easier to orient itself spatially during the intense phases of Fight ! For this, I used a set of Dem Data as well as a large aerial photo of the concerned region : finally, the map is 4 km by side and is surrounded by secondary terrains of the same origin and size: The whole is therefore 12 x 12 km; The whole textured in the same way, in maximum quality: which explains the weight of the final zip file........:

the view is increased to 3 km and the summits of the mountains rise to more than 2145 meters: under these conditions, the dogfight experience become Fairly impressive: And, for an even closer experience of reality, I strongly advise you to use the Kestrel app of FreeTrack Project: BF2FreeLook v1.1




Thus, the cockpit view becomes panoramic and makes it easier to follow the positions of the opponents: immersion in the game is then greatly improved.

For better visibility, the video below was realized without HUD, which is not advisable in game: see rather ....



It's a pure dogfight map; No infantry mode, and therefore it is strongly advised to use,
as soon as possible, jets and helicopters.

- For installation:

Two possibilities;

Either you insert the file in the right place, from the .rar file, or you
use the installer if you are not comfortable with file manipulation !

In the case of the .exe installer,

just double click on the .exe file and the
map will install directly to the right place, provided you have a system
in 32 bit:

otherwise, if you have a system in 64 bit, In the installer
window, when it proposes the installation location of the file, replace

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\Levels\MountainsDogfight1

with

C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\Levels\MountainsDogfight1

In the case of the .rar file,

the MountainsDogfight1.rar file can be unpacked, where you want: then you must take the file
"MountainsDogfight1" and include it in C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\Levels:

Do not be frightened by the weight (421mo) of the map; It's just the result of using very detailed textures; no more !

- Presentation:

The relief of the map was created, starting from DEM
coming from the north of Italy (Digital Elevation Model);
Then covered with a texture made from aerial orthophotos.

And therefore, the landscape you are going to fly over in the game, therefore exists really;
And to be more precise, it is a region situated on the border between the Garda Lake
and the south of Italian Trentino: If you are curious, you can find it via Google Earth.

Finally, we have a playable space of 1024x4, suitable for air flight, and surrounded by a similar terrain, in many points of view: therefore 12 km x 12km; Furthermore the map is parametrized to allow aircrafts to fly extremely high, much higher than the mountain peaks, here 2145 m

- Gamemode:

In the solo mode, you have access only to fighter planes: in the coop mode, you have access to the planes but also to two of the helicopters: in the conquest mode , you have, of course, access to all the vehicles: For a good balance, there are at disposal, 10 helicopters and 12 planes, which allows almost to about thirty players / bots.

That's why each mode has only the 32 players version


- For game logic;

The helicopters capture the flags; The planes protect the helicopters as they progress:
easy !


- Immersion in the game:

I strongly advise the use of a good joystick for the piloting, as well as, for an even closer experience of reality, using the Kestrel app of FreeTrack Project: BF2FreeLook v1.1: thanks to him !!
So the cockpit view becomes panoramic and makes it easier to follow the positions of the opponents: immersion in the game is then greatly improved.

- Issues; smile

There are still a few artifacts in spite of the care taken in the realization of the map, problems inherent to the game itself: since this is a 1024x4 map, you will have to remove the dynamic shadows in the video options, Ugly spots characteristics: something else, do not be surprised if the bots tend to be suicidal in the mountains, I have failed to tam them; You will see: Lol!

We'll have to make a date for a dogfight sometime, it would be great to get this map populated !

yes, it would be great to be able to play this map all together; Unfortunately, seeing the number of download of the map on our site, I fear that it will be difficult to be very numerous; Besides, for my part, I have never met a single player on this dogfight map; Therefore, no illusion; On Moddb, I've had, so far, more than 720 downloads, but, probably, people only play solo and don't know the existence of our server!

For the Kestrel app, when I presented the map, it was intended for the game box, and the application was working; With the Bf2 version of Battlelog, the app no longer works; Therefore, no need to search for: to compensate for this, I use the command "mousse look" witch I find even superior; But, for this, the joystick is mandatory, so to free the mouse which then allows a look around very efficient; This seems to me much closer to a real pilote behavior, compared to the use of the rear view F11 that, personally, I find close to a cheat: but, everyone accepts it ....... Ok !

but, if you have, beside, a box version of Bf2, and want try the Kestrel Bf2FreeLook, you can pick the app, on my drive, here..

I watched your video: very impressive; But impossible to go so far in details with our old Bf2; I am the first to regret it; We can not compete with more recent productions, like DCS, for example ..

I love the map you have created, it's beautiful, once Summer fades and we have more regular activity again I will set a date in the calendar to try and get a good game going on your map.

I guess, my only issue with it was that I found it difficult at times to actually get a jet due to where I spawned, is there any possibility you could create a slightly edited version where it's easier for everyone to get a jet/heli or is that too much work/to ask? smiling

Yes David, of course it is possible: but, you know, like me, that each player will have to replace the old version with the new one, in order to be able to play online: I am well aware, from the beginning, that the random spawn is a problem; And as I can modify all the gameplay, make me the menu of what you would like; I will make you, with pleasure, a LostMountains, "a la carte" ! smile

Well, McSlaine, you have intuition! This weekend, I just finished, another version of this map; This time, with ground vehicles and infantry piloted by the AI: the principle; Prevent the taking of flags by armored convoys with jet and choppers: but nothing prevents you from jumping by parachute to get into a jeep or other vehicle ...... if there are any who want to try it, solo, I give you my drive link to download it.....smile

Hi everyone, today I propose a new video of the Mountains Map Dogfight; but this time with an intense gameplay, as well as a very special soundtrack, because coming from real aerial combat (Gulf War ..... etc): the video is long enough but nobody is obliged to look until, at the end, of course ! smile

The advantage of using the Bf2FreeLook is, here, clearly evident, as the imersion it provides is powerful: everything become so much more natural, in this case, and close to the real air combat .......

And don't be afraid to push the sound really strong......smile

Hi comrades,

thank you all for your kind comments; and thanks to you, 5tarLine to host my so special map: I like your idea to meet together, in the mountains; however, you asked me to make some changes to make the game more intuitive; what I have done ! In a few words, I will explain the new gameplay; hoping not to be too long....smile and, of course, I am ready for any changes to your recommendations, at all; nothing is definitively fixed; So this is it !

US and CH as factions; the game begins on the airports, at the peaks: 1x2 and 1x3 spawn aircraft one after the other; first step, take the flag on the opposite slope: 2 seconds of presence is enough: this allows the spawn of some helicopters, as well as a VTOL: then, the other flags take 6 seconds to be taken; hence the importance of helicopters, and possibly VTOLs: the other planes are too fast: their missions are to protect the helicopters towards the enemy flags: at each take, additional helicopters: the last flag allows to benefit from the only neutral airport of th map; some stingers are also present at the spawn, but not everywhere: in the end, you have to try to take the flag of the opposing base, at the top of the mountain:

Difficult because only the helicopters are able to(10 seconds for the flag of the summits): as you can imagine, they will be really vulnerable during the long ascent towards the objective: here again, protection by the jets is paramount, given the time necessary to achieve this !

On the other hand, I still do not see how to prevent a player from taking a flag after parachuting ?! Forbidden, of course!

OK, it is just a first proposition: also, from this point of view, once the new map fixed, it will be necessary that each player delete the old one; even if the new name is a little different; to avoid any confusion ... anyway, we can discuss, now ! smilesmile

Since the coolie hat is designed to play this function, I think Bf2freelook allows it; even if I did not try that!

For sure, the software setup is also designed to work with the NumPad; then it should be possible to bind the coolie hat with it. smile

It's time to set a date cataly63 smile !

A couple of questions:
- Would you like to play on the current version of your map running on the Server? Or is there a new updated version ready to play that you would prefer to use?
- When are you definitely available? More important than anyone elses will be your attendance at your own event on your own map! I would suggest a Saturday or Sunday afternoon/evening to increase the chances of more players showing up. So perhaps the 14th/15th or 21st/22nd of October? If any of those dates work or you have something else in mind just let me know and a start time would be helpful too.

Hi 5tarLine ,

given the rather short time for a game together, it is clearly better to stay with the first version of the map, even imperfect: if we manage to collect 5 or 6 players, it will already be a success.

Have you changed the speed the jets fly at ? they seem very slow.
Or is it maybe because the map is so big ?

If you have the option to mod anything you could try making jets and helis fly faster.

Thus, one is much closer to a realistic flight: In terms of distance and maneuver, the vanilla maps are a complete fantasy and have nothing to do with reality.

It was an overreaction on my part, when you fly towards a mountain it takes twice as long to get there as a normal map because of the scale.
Thus it feels like you are only flying half speed.
I was thinking "how can we have a dogfight flying this slow" but when you ignore the scenery and just concentrate on the other jets it feels normal again.
It feels exactly like that video of the jet pilot flying round the fjords.

I had the same sensation when I first tried it, didn't take long to realise why but it did seem strange initially. Pick something far away to fly towards and it may take you longer than you expect to get there.

It does feel a lot like that video indeed.

Have been a bit busier than I expected, hence the late response. Now that I think about it that would have been a bit too short notice for it to have much chance of being successful.

Perhaps we can put a few different upcoming dates to a vote, providing you are available for them:

Saturday 21/10

With tweaked files, there are always elements that could be adjust; ......and as one say, work in progress! smile

Now, I'm waiting to see if there are requests from players for these changes: for now, it's a mod, but I would like to make a standalone map for Bf2: I do not know yet if this will be possible, given the amount of changed files!?

I've just got my BF2 up and running again and one of the next things i need to do is to get this map back on again !
Can i use the version i still have on my harddrive or do i need to download it again ?

Cataly, have a think about putting some of those helis from the road rage map on.

Maybe AA from the carrier at home bases ? or would that be too much ?

Or maybe a bridge here and there ?

Hi McSlaine, this idea of adding some bridges is interesting: and, in fact, on the satellite image, you can see at least one large in the real valley: it is semi circular and is at the bottom, right on the map: but, the ideal would be to have several; I only hope to distribute them on the map, so that the landscape remains coherent, compared to roads: for helicos, I can use the ones you propose: you will only need to be patient before I finish work.....smile

As for your map, if you have the first version, I advise you to replace it with the extended version; but, anyway, the map files are easily moved by copy paste, without any inconvenience!

Hello Cataly, i downloaded the newest version and had a fly around, the crash sites are a nice touch. smile
I baled out to have a closer look then i became commander so i could send myself some transport and have race around the mountains........oh, that option has been deleted smile

Even though this map is solely for the purpose of flying around it would still be nice to have vehicles.

..............hmmm...........the commanders on different forces drop different cars when asked for transport so that is a value that can be changed, is it possible to change that out so the commander could drop other vehicles ?

I have allways thought the game makers should have made it so that if the commander sends transport and then chooses a patch of water as the target then a boat should automaticly spawn under the parachute instead of a car, that way the commander could also help pilots who bale over water.

is it possible to make the commander send a transport heli ? or a tank ? smile

I figured out years ago of how to use mouse look and control the jet at the same time as well as moving camera positions around, here's example of just the camera positioning.



There is literally one file and one line of code in a config file to give mouse look working while still having control. I am not sure if you guys want or need help sorting that out. Leme know

Speaking of which, when recording footage for the LS BF2 Dogfight Tournament Promo Video - youtu.be/ehDY-bQqOCA - I disabled the hud via console command renderer.drawHud 0, right? But me and Germany SW03_Carbon realized that if you do this and switch to first person you will not see the plane's hud as well.

Have you ever experienced this? Not that I need a fix or anything, it was just a curiosity because I really didn't think that the game would also make the cockpit's hud invisible. I thought it would only remove the ammo/health count, the map/clock, the killfeed/chat and so forth.

But yeah, now that I stop and think about it, when you switch to mouse-look the cockpit's hud actually vanishes until you go back to controlling the aircraft and the cockpit view resets back to the middle. Or at least, this is true for helicopters as far as my memory goes.

Cool smiling I look forward to it. Yeah, I have experienced that drawhud command, it does take Everything away(usually, though sometimes names will still be above players heads/vehicle, I do believe there is a way to take out all the hud accept for the jet hud but I haven't tried that in soo long. I'll need to look into that, but yeah the way I do the mouse look thing, the Jet Hud stays in the center of the screen when looking around which is a little annoying but it works.

hmmm do you mean that the cockpit hud stays fixed on the glass panels of the jet (so you don't see it anymore when you look away), or it stays fixed in front of you no matter where you are looking at, with the mouse-camera?

Anyways after reading your post I realized that the other problemwas indeed the friendly name tags popping up and ruining the footage ... well, flying without central hud is problematic, from more than one point of view: no more indication of speed, no altimeter, no more indication of engines power, and how doing accurate shot without sight ????? is annoying to do without, except for a sweet ballad discovery without flying bots trying to get you down : formerly, there was the opportunity to download Bf2Freelook from Kestrel and use it to remove the hud at the mouselook: unfortunately, he only works with 32-bit W machines: nowadays, most of us are in 64 bits, especially useful for new games: for my part, and to skirt the problem, I spawn some airplanes tweaked with the ObjectTemplate.toggleMouseLook 0, with or without the hud to have choise: not ideal but it suits me!
