"Ending time: August 29, 2016 - 00:59" LOL, did you pick this youself??

I voted "It's OK", because the TODO list is full of nice features that will be added in the future and will make the website better.

But for example, it's nice that we can add BBCode by selecting text and pressing the relative button, or that the caret is in the middle of the generated BBCode tags, if you just add them using the buttons.

Smileys are supported ( Excited ), but they don't have a panel where you can browse them or select them somehow.

If it's not on the ToDo list, then it's a suggestion! tongue

EDIT: Oh yeah, I just noticed the link to the smileys.
But you should think about changing the background color of these tables!

(Cause right now it makes them hard to read, especially the BBCode one).

Thank-you smiling

I may take you up on that as there are a few things I'm struggling with currently, although I'm not sure I've done THAT much to help you yet! I must say I liked your website too, I think it's my second favourite BF2 site. Obviously this one is #1 as I designed it myself and have rewritten/modified a hell of a lot of the backend code so I'm heavily biased... Laugh

May I ask if there is anything which you feel stands out here that you like? Or anything that annoyed you/that sucks so far or you think needs to be changed/fixed?

Which languages do you know and what are your design skills? Did you build your site from the ground up?

Cheers,

I like the flash video on the main page. It is a point of difference. Also like the dogtag login area. I also like your stats page that is a neat idea and something I hadnt thought about.

I find the text a little to small but that isnt a big thing. I also am a bit ocd when it comes to gaps on pages ( amongst many other things wink ) - the content area on the home page mainly but that will fill as more content is added, so again not a big deal.

We started with a stock template and then modified it to suit our needs. My line of work is based around Website Design and Development, SEO/SEM and Graphic Design. Varying platforms. If there is something Im not sure of there is usually someone close by that understands it! Unfortunately I only know English - and a tiny bit of german

Thanks for the feedback again, appreciate it. Yes I was quite proud when I finished making the dog-tag login. The video is in fact HTML 5 ready and available in mp4, ogg & webm to make sure a wide variety of platforms and browsers are covered from Macs with Safari, to some smart-phone browsers and of course Windows browsers. I filmed the video myself from a BattleRecorder Demo which was from an old server I setup, (in fact I am featured in it blowing up a jet and destroying some infantry despite being outnumbered!) then went to work with my very limited video-editing / software skills Laugh Tweaking the colours, speed and various other things and adding the Lost-Soldiers logo which I designed in Photoshop.

May I ask which text you are referring to, is it all? And which gaps?

That's interesting. SEO has basically been my proper career up until now along with Social, Content and a bit of editorial. The Web-Dev stuff is largely on the side although I have designed a few sites for cash and used some of those skills for SEO too. When it comes to languages, I was referring to coding languages Excited

Cheers,

You must type the code manually for the shoutbox smiling

the code In this list in the "tag" column: http://www.lost-soldiers.org/smileys.php

For example
Code:
1.
<laugh>
or
Code:
1.
will give you my favourite smiley: Laugh

Also, you can just try normal smiley codes like:

Code:
1.
:) ;) :P :D

This will give you the blue colour smileys:

smiling wink tongue amused

These aren't listed on the smileys page but I will add them at some point.

Oh, another thing that I would change - but this relates to the Forum rather than on the website - is the quoting ...
It's too small, makes it hard to read (with 125% zoom on Chrome). And why is it aligned (almost) in the center?! Laugh
In my opinion it should use just a little bit more space; characters should be just a little bit bigger than that.

Ok, interesting, I use 100% zoom on chrome and I can read everything perfectly easily:

Can you take a screenshot for me?

Yes alignment could be tweaked a little. There are also deeper problems with the quote code which are much more difficult & complicated to fix unfortunately.

By the looks of it, your Monitor is either bigger than mine, or has a much higher resolution.
I recall it being a 4K screen, so we may actually see things differently. amused
I can't hit a Transport Helicopter with the TV as well, so ... AHAHAHAH smile

Like nested quotes and such? I think you've already addressed nesting, and that it is supported by this board.

Here are your screenshots:

Interesting - In your screenshots it doesn't look that bad to me, it's readable just a little fuzzy?

Yes it's a 4k screen on my Dell laptop: 15.6" 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) InfinityEdge touch

Well I'm not sure if you would say it's "supported" the quotes work but if you try and quote another quote it all gets tangled up and nasty and doesn't work correctly, so you must manually separate quotes etc as I'm sure you've noticed. That is what will be difficult to fix.

Hmm will take a look at the bullet point thing, it's probably just something missing from the stylesheet.

Yeah I deleted the old Officer/Forum Moderator Icon so right now there is nothing there. Soon I will setup all the new forum ranks, It's just difficult to find something nice for this and unique.

-- I've made changes to the e-mail. It was showing on the profile, squads, registered users list & who is online. Now you will only see the e-mail if you are logged in. Are you happy with that?

It was also showing on the top of a forum post which I have removed entirely.

It's readable, it's not fuzzy, it's simply small and I am a whiny bitch, I know. Laugh
Lightblue does not help either.

But that's not the top of the list; making the e-mail seen to logged-in users instead makes me more happy, yes.

So I've been fixing things here and there that some of you may have noticed but probably not. Laugh

Hopefully the site should be feeling a little bit smoother for all. I can only apologise if you have slow loading times. The site is quite video & image heavy and if you are in an area with slow internet connections you may find it a little slow to load pages at times. I can only excuse this by saying technology develops so rapidly and the majority of people are on faster connections now, I hope for those of you with slower speeds that you will be upgraded at some point! Often it takes a bit of research to realise what is actually available, i'll give an example:

I was pretty pissed off to find out that in Central London the best speeds I could get in my area were 10Mbit/s which would equate to around 1MBps download/upload speed and amongst the worst 3 areas for internet speed in the whole of England! After researching online I found a company called Hyperoptic who were looking into installing fibre optic internet across parts of the UK (starting with London) and fortunately my area was one of them! On their website, they showed a map of the UK with pin-points on certain locations where you could register interest in them installing the infrastructure for high-speed internet, so of course I did. Luckily, many others in my area had also registered their interest and within a couple of months I was sat there with a 100/100Mbit fibre optic line which has worked flawlessly ever since. I can download a 4K movie in about 30 minutes and a 1080p in under 10. I could even upgrade to 1 Gbit/s for just a little more money p/month. So, the point of that long-winded story is, if you are unhappy with your internet connection, do some research (best online) and find out what you could have instead.

Since we have had so many new Soldiers registering recently, it would be great to hear more feedback on what people like / don't like or any issues you are having regarding the website.

Please vote on the top of this topic & comment below if you are able smiling

1. Say I want to type a text in Courier New_1, or I want to select a word of my post and make it red_1.
In both cases I can interact with the COLOR / FONT dropdown lists in the BBCode options; so far, so good.

But, the issue kicks in when I want to either start a new sentence in Courier New_2, or I want to mark another part of the text in red_2. In fact, the option you select in the dropdown list keeps being marked, and you can't choose it again.

In other words, if I select the string "red_1", click on "COLOR" and then click on "red", consequently I can't perform the same actions with the string "red_2". I'd have to either select a different color, or reset the dropdown list to the "COLOR" (default) option, but with the latter, the {color=0}{/color} BBCode tags are generated ...

Maybe there's another way to go about these dropdown lists?
My idea is to reset the list element to the default one, everytime you select something from the list. This way I'd be able to mark something "red" againg, or I would be able to create another Courirer New piece of text.
The other idea is to generate the BBCode tags everytime I click on an item of the dropdown list, even if it is currently already selected.

2. The "Auto Resize" option for pictures breaks the BBCode; specifically, if I try to embed the IMG into URL tags - and the picture is too big - clicking the picture will redirect me to the fullsize picture, and not to the embedded URL behind it.

3. You should mention that the limit for the signature is 345 characters. smiling
EDIT: I'm afraid that's not the case ... There may be a bug with the signature code which prevents the whole signature to be displayed.

Writing this down otherwise I will forget yet again:
do you think it's possible to add the map name, to the webpage that lists the demo files?

Much like in the battlelog listing: https://battlerecorder.bf2.us/#/list.
I believe in-game there's also the map name as well; so do you believe it can be done on the webpage?

1. I agree and as I believe I already told you was aware of this. You can work around it by selecting 'nothing' i.e. the drop-down menu title and then going back to it. If it would reset after or allow multiple usage/clicks that would be useful, not urgent at the moment though.

2. Ok, I guess this will need to be looked at. Assuming this is after you have wrapped the image that is too large in the URL tags properly?

3. I haven't had any issues with the signatures, you will need to investigate further/let me know on that one.

Regarding the webpage that lists the demo files, obviously that needs to be looked at soon and downloading the demo files through the site needs to be more accessible as well. I spoke to Mike & Spencer when they released their demo portal for Battlelog, which I must say, is really nicely done. I asked them how they got the map-name from the demo file, apparently it can be extracted from the demo file itself but I have no idea how they do it. Feel free to ask them. What I will do which is a lot easier is have a separate listing/page for each server where you can easily see from which server/map the demos came from.

Currently it's:

Wake Island - http://www.lost-soldiers.org/demos/1
Strike at Karkand - http://www.lost-soldiers.org/demos/2
Gulf Of Oman - http://www.lost-soldiers.org/demos/3
Dalian Plant - http://www.lost-soldiers.org/demos/4
Operation Blue Pearl - http://www.lost-soldiers.org/demos/5

However, we currently have too many demo files in the folders for you to see in your browser which is why they each need a demo-portal type page.

Cheers,

Apparently the "FONT" tag causes the issue:

Changing "Courier" instead of "Courier new":

Editing the [f...me.htm
file

Apparently the "FONT" tag causes the issue:

Changing "Courier" instead of "Courier new":
...rar 3.35 MB

Without font tag:
pbsetup+legacy.rar 3.35 MB

Without font nor size tags:
pbsetup+legacy.rar 3.35 MB

Once again I'm confused, can you please explain what you are intending to do and what is not working? smiling

I meant to embed a "FONT" tag inside an "URL" tag, but for some reason the embedding does not work and the result is a wrong displayed hyperlink.

Example - Nesting Courier New text inside an url does not work:

normal_text[font=couri...ew_text[/font]normal_text
Code:
1.
[URL=test_test]normal_text[font=courier new]courier_new_text[/font]normal_text[/URL]

Not even with another font:

normal_text[font=tahom...ma_text[/font]normal_text
Code:
1.
[URL=test_test]normal_text[font=tahoma]tahoma_text[/font]normal_text[/URL]

Actually, if add the text above, to my previous post, the first example becomes "normal_textnormal_text". O.O

Anyways, adding the bullets to the bullet points lists takes the absolute priority!!! Laugh ahah

Ah ok, and can you not achieve the desired result by wrapping the URL in the font tag? I.e. the font tag outside?

I could not do that within the PunkBuster guide, because half of the hyperlink was Courier New, the other half was not; so eventually I dropped it. But I assume it works if we reverse the order of the Tags:

normal_text_courier_new_text_normal_textt
Code:
1.
[font=courier new][URL=test_test]normal_text_courier_new_text_normal_text[/URL]t[/font]

Hi.

The website is very nice.

I would like to point out that it took almost half a day for me to see the login at the top left after enlisting smiling hahaha. (Could be just me being blind as usual).
Also it could be that the login blended in a bit too much over the video as I'm red/green colorblind.

Just a heads up as it could be others that haven't loggen in because they just didn't notice it straight away amused

A little note for everyone, this site looks by far the best on Google Chrome. It will function fine on Firefox / IE but I haven't made a big effort to make it look as nice on these browsers yet with the styles etc.

Thanks for your feedback smile

I would imagine that colourblindness definitely makes it much harder to see and it doesn't stand out as much. For myself, it's very clear and easy to see the silver tags on the tropical background. smiling

I will keep this in mind and see what I can do in the future. I am planning on adding a top-bar and re-designing / changing the layout of the site at some point when I have the time.

Let me know if you have any other issues.

Cheers,

If you add the width value, it seems to solve the issue.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't like that before.

I'm afraid that's not possible, although it's a good idea, it's definitely not a priority at the moment.

Do you mean it's not possible at the moment, because of its low priority; or that it's not possible to do it, stop? Cause I am pretty sure I've seen - not too sure here - some websites or softwares that would call on the Windows File Explorer and let you pick a list of files to upload / open / modify and such ...

So which of the two did you mean bud!? smile

Of course it's possible, most image hosting sites allow multi-file upload as do others like Facebook etc.

Unfortunately it would require a total redesign of the gallery both backend & frontend and I would have to learn some advanced PHP / JavaScript to code it as multi-file uploading code is not something I'm familiar with.

Okay so, other than the fact that when you reply you should be sent to the post's #fragment isntead of the thread page ...

... this is harder to notice: when you add a reply to a page that has already got the maximum amount of posts (11), a new page gets created, but you're not redirected to it. Instead, you're redirected to the page that you were browsing.

Example: say I visit page 2 of a thread that has 4 full pages. If I post a new reply while on page 2, a new page - page 5 - will be created (because page 4 already contained 11 posts), but I will be redirected to page 2 again and so I'll have to click on page 5 to see my new post.

You are right, I was aware of a few issues with this but had kinda been ignoring it. I guess it's becoming more important as the forum activity continues to increase.
For stuff like this, could you please post it in the Web Development -> ...ues / Bugs To Fix / Plans Topic as it's a definite issue. Let's keep this topic for more general discussion about the website as opposed to bugs.

Cheers,

Hey man, sup! When you get back online, would it be much trouble to edit these topics with any of these three strings? I know it's a bad practice to hardcode it, but it's really a small operation; I think we should state clearly on the Forum that those Servers are offline for a reason ... or that they're just offline ... or that they will be back.

Fixed - I think smiling

Well, buddy; I may be the only damn fool that reports / rather notices this issue smile ... No, the whole logic of your BBCode Codor / Size / Font is flawed, compared to other boards I use. The reset button is just a band aid. Just follow me ...

What needs to be done, and I am sure you can do it somehow (cause I believe you've already coded the correct logic into the reset button, you just need to apply it elsewhere), is just to reset each field everytime you use it ... That's the way it is on all Forums: you click "Red"? Okay, a pair of COLOR Tags appears, but "Red" does not stay selected in the dropdown list! (So you can pick "Red" again anytime you want, and spawn an additional pair of COLOR BBCode Tags).

You select a word and want to make it red? Fine, you do it by picking the "Red" option and then the dropdown list resets itself automatically, so that you can select another word and make it red again. No need to manually press any reset button. Do you copy on the correct flow?

Each click you do on Color, Size, Font, should be picked up and spawn the correct BBCode Tags (either wrapping the selected text - which already happens - or by just spawning them at the caret's position); but then the dropdown list should be cleared from the selections you just did. smiling This way you can pick "Red" again, how many times you like.

With your current fix, you'd have to go through an additional click again (with the reset button). I'm being picky cause I believe you can do it easily, just by moving the business logic you've just embedded into the Reset button, put it into an automatism that clears those three dropdown lists everytime they get used. If it's not that immediate - and I don't know it cause I lack PHP knowledge - leave the Reset button as is ... as I am the only one breaking ya balls about this thing. Laugh

Gotta go, catch y'all later!!!

The reset can be a temporary option, it's possible to fix but it's a bit more difficult. No PHP required for this, it's the frontend part with JavaScript & HTML.

Yes, at least you can hit reset then use the same colour/size/font/heading - you don't have to insert COLOR=0 for example first or a different colour you don't want. It's a temporary solution.

One thing I didn't like though... It emails you your password when you register. It worries me a bit that passwords might be insecure? I changed it as soon as I registered due to this reason.

Cheers.

We never had an old one, but this one is being continually developed & improved. Passwords are encrypted.

Okay I have some questions regarding the "Team"-section on this website, just for interest.
1) First of all I'm wondering about the function of the "description" column, because the only thing I see there is "no description available".
2) What are the criteria to appear as "inactive"? Do you have to be inactive on this webpage or in the game or both? How long do you have to be inactive?
3) What happens with members who are inactive for a long time? Is there a "kick" after a certain period of time (how long)? Or are you degraded in rank (as a warning), for example from officer to ranger?
Hope that this is the right place to post these questions (and not the "website"-support forum)

Thanks for you answers smiling

Well yeah it's a borderline topic to post into but it's okay.

1) 5tarLine said it will be used in the future, I think he said that, somewhere in the Forum;
2) Usually on both, but mainly on the website. You can play the game but if you're a Member (Member =/= than normal registered user) we expect you to visit the website and take part into the Community discussions, right? Or visit us on Vent and so forth.

So generally speaking, inactive users tend to stop playing the game too; but as I said I believe one would be marked inactive even if he stopped visiting us but kept playing ... elsewhere.

3) Well I should let 5tarLine answer this, as he is the one in charge for dealing with these type of inactive Members. What I can tell you is that at the moment there isn't in place anything you said, but I find your statements as good suggestions to what we might implement in the future (an automatic kick, or a warning that you'll be demoted).

With some of the current users I recall we've sent them an email message - I don't remember exaclty if prior to marking them inactive or after - to warn them that they were ... inactive. amused Staff Officer Italy S_h_a_r_k_93

1) Correct, I'll explain this soon.
2) Basically correct, providing you check in on the website every now and then we won't mark you as inactive but we prefer those who take the time to engage in the Forum as well, it's not too much to ask. If a member only plays on the BF2 Servers and never uses the Website then I probably wouldn't mark them as inactive unless we've told them they need to show activity on the website and have ignored that.
3) Yes, it's a good suggestion, I have thought about an automated system before for this and it wouldn't be that hard to implement but as always, there are more important things to do first - I might add it to the list for the longer-term.

The website is really good. Its great to know that it covers little features while working through and doing things in the site. As well as the amazing little details and information needed is well put out and the creator of course has done a good job working on this site. applause

It's alright for the most part, i mean I've seen better, but it gets the job done, and were all able to navigate around it nicely. Thanks for the hard work smiling

Yeah 5tarLine, I could do better but I wouldn't want to undermine your fragile ego.

TBH I did not read 8 pages of forum posts, but here's what I think:

* Visually the colours seem to be a nice match
* I like it how the forum is integrated into the website, so there is no seperate board.
* I am getting old and had trouble figuring out how to register, and where to login. Login screen image load is very slow for me.
* I would like to have some support for mobile users (phones, tablets) as navigating on a touch based device is a bit difficult
* Should the servers be listed horizontally instead of vertically? To me that would be easier to read

Fixed.

Agreed, our website was never meant for mobile; it has zero mobile support, royalpenguin also mentioned this as a minus.

This suggestion is as old as 19.05.2017 in a board you cannot see. amused
