Battlefield 2Advice on Jet-play

TL;DR: Need tips for maneuvering jet using mouse.

Greetings LS community! Been a long time since I posted but I've recently started playing BF2 a lot more due to obvious, worldwide reasons xD. My ping has drastically worsened over the months too so I've shifted to lot more air battles. So that brings me to this post.

I have recently bought a new gaming mouse, so I've been learning to ace a jet which can hopefully get me an entry into the LS Dogfighting scene. In general terms, I know my way around a jet. Changing camera views, spotting, and I've been in dogfights on servers before too, only that I lost 80% of them.

My only problem boils down to maneuvering. I'm used to using WASD key combination for jet movements instead of using a mouse so it's difficult to execute rolls and turns with smoothness. What I'm asking is, what do I need to do to get my movements right with a mouse while keeping sensitivity at default?Do I need a large area for my mousepad to execute long fast turns?

Thanks for reading the long post, will appreciate tips amused

TL;DR (don't they usually go at the bottom? https://i.imgur.com/li8jmLw.png) - the mousepad area depends on your sensitivity

I have recently had similar problems after reinstalling Windows and finding myself comfortable with new DPI settings for my mouse; but ultimately in dogfight (with mouse) you have to find a balance between fast movements and accurate aiming: increasing sensitivity will make your plane react faster given small mouse movements, you don't move the mouse a lot but this will cost accuracy; whereas lowering the sensitivity will help with accuracy but you will need longer movements (and mouse pad https://i.imgur.com/1PY94e5.png) to execute your maneuvers.

[toggle=How to bind pitch up to Spacebar]If you have Falcon as secondary control, you need to remove it (click it and press Esc), and Apply.
You need to have Spacebar set as primary control for pitch up instead, and mouse axis as secondary.
It needs to be primary otherwise other mouse inputs will conflict with the pitch up, interrupting it.

Close the game, then open this file with a text editor (notepad is fine):
Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001\Controls.con
(0001 should be your main profile, you can check by opening Profile.con)

Now, in this file, at some point you will find this line:
ControlMap.create AirPlayerInputControlMap

And after that line, there are the controls for aircraft (jets).
You should see that you have a line that should be like this:

ControlMap.addAxisToAxisMapping c_PIPitch IDFMouse IDAxis_1 0 0
(and there should not be any additional c_PIPitch lines as you cleared the secondary input)

What you need to do is to change the 0 at the end, and put 1 instead:
this will make the mouse as secondary input for pitching movement.

Now, above that line you need to add this new line (paste it above the line that you just modified):
ControlMap.addKeysToAxisMapping c_PIPitch IDFKeyboard IDKey_ArrowDown IDKey_Space 0

This will put the space bar as your primary key to make the plane go up. It is very useful for us mouse dogfighters so you don't have to constantly reset your mouse to do loops; the spacebar does the leg work, whilst your mouse is used to adjust the direction.[/toggle][toggle=Quotes from the best bf2 mouse pilot]You could try a higher in-game sensitivity. With a higher sensitivity you won't have to lift ur mouse as much; but higher sens. could make it a bit harder to be precise (for instance when you use machine gun, because it will obviously be harder to aim with a higher sens.).

But with enough practice I think it might not be that bad, you just need to get accustomed to it. You would need to find a balance so that your sens. is neither too low - making you lift the mouse too much - nor too high - making it hard to be precise.

OR you could bind a key for pitching back, as that's usually where you have to lift your mouse to keep going on (eg. in loops). So, if you use a key instead, you won't have that mouse-lifting problem when you pitch up. You can still use your mouse for aiming at enemies, obviously, so you can still be accurate.

By "pitching back", I mean pulling up, when you pull the stick towards you to gain altitude. And if you decide to try a pitch key, make sure you bind the key as the primary pitch control and the mouse as the secondary pitch control. Otherwise you will have the problem where any slight mouse input on the vertical axis will prevail over the key input, breaking your loop.
[/toggle]
Hope that helps. If your mouse has adjustable DPI settings, an eye-opener for me has been multiplying the DPI value with the in-game sensitivity in order to get the real sensitivity value that you're currently running with.
I sit around 4800 now (1600x3.0), Harsha scores 5000.

I started out using keyboard/mouse, then switched to joystick and it is sooooo much easier (and lots more fun) with joystick, just configure it then drag the sensitivity, pitch and yaw sliders to 10 and you are a flying ace.

Plus it's going to take you 10 times as long to get to the same standard using mouse to fly.

Shame about the time you've invested learning to fly with mouse but for the fun factor alone i would strongly advise you to use joystick (with twist axis) if you have one rather than mouse and keyboard.

Speaking of which, I shall add that those pitch/yaw factors only seem to kick in if you're using Joystick.
If you are on mouse they are not part of the picture, or so I have been told; never really tested it myself.

Thanks for the reply Shark amused Yea I think I'll try messing about with my DPI settings to figure out an optimal sensitivity. I wouldn't have to do a lot because my current mouse sensitivity is perfect for me to take a jet into the air and do ground targets without a hitch.

Also, that's a good suggestion by the 'Best mouse pilot' (wonder who it is?) to simply find a middle ground. Maybe practice is all I lack, and mouse pad space of course. P. S: My bad, I didn't know where TL;DR goes xD

Thanks for the reply McSlaine! (Long time :p)
I do in fact have a new joystick that my roommate bought in February.

I even tried using it in-game and true, it was so much fun and a lot easier than keyboard/mouse but the one thing that I couldn't quite get a hold of was the convenience of having to yank the thing in just the right amount to not overshoot a turn or throw the joystick out of the table.

I loved the experience of it but I was unable to find how it could be effective in a high paced dogfight. But since you suggest that I drag the Pitch and Yaw factors to 10 along with the joystick, I'll try that out this time. I have a habit of not messing around with jet controls but this I'll do.

I use mouse and keyboard for more than 12 years now and I don't think I will switch to joystick because I am very used and adapted to m+k by now. In addition, a joystick is not necessary to become a very godd jet player, you can also achieve that with m+k. All I can say is that you need to find the best sensitivity and DPI settings for yourself, i fly with only 900 DPI for example (instead of 4800 by Shark or 5000 by Harsha) and my ingame sensitivity is 1, pitch and yaw factor 1.0.

If you need some practice, I would be happy to train with you.

No no, that's the value we get if we multiply our mouse DPI, with the in-game sensitivity; it gives you a better reading of your real sensitivity. In your case you'd score just 900, which is pretty weird man: the plane would be slow as fuck. Laugh I am currently settled on 1600 DPI and 3.0 in-game sensitivity, although in the past I used to have less DPI (1200) and in-game was around 5.0. Pitch/yaw factor at 10 but like I said, that's for joystick only.

I'd be more than delighted to train with a pro man! You're right about the m+k though. I understand it's all about practice and time, but I sure as hell get frustrated pretty fast and look for advice that could improve my skill. I'm going to download the dogfight maps from this website soon and hope to practice with you and whoever's interested to pwn me in the air. Thanks for the reply amused

P. S: I apologize for the late responses on this thread

Delle and Rotblut can often times be seen in our Discord, willing to fight each other as well as others, in our public dogfight server https://i.imgur.com/tPy04BY.png information on the maps to download and whom to ask passwords to, can be found on our unranked servers' forum boards "Current Maps & Settings" topics.
